Great podcast as usual, guys. I’d like to comment on your first bit about evil. Sorry to split hairs, but I think this is an important point. The way it came out, what you guys said, is that there are two basic views: that evil is real, or that there is just ignorance and no evil. You guys came down on the side of evil being real. At a practical level, in terms of what most people mean by the term, I agree. But I’d like to bring in a point from traditional Christian philosophy (which is rooted in both Greek and Hebrew thought), that evil is really the absence of good. Sure, there are contrasts in nature, Yin and Yang, but those opposites don’t equate to Good and Evil. Let’s not give evil more credit than it deserves. It’s not some opposite team that just happens to playing against ours. It’s the absence of what should be there.
You also brought up the excellent point about people not just waking up and deciding to be evil, that in fiction, the motives of a bad guy add depth. Ya, I suppose that’s often true. But I’d also say that that line of thinking is partially motivated by post modern flaky moral relativist academics, who want everything to be shades of grey with no real evil or good. They sneer at simple heroes and villains. Many gripping stories have villains that enter the scene purely evil, and the story doesn’t suffer for it. Think Darth Vader in the original movies, and Sauron in Lord of the Rings. Now, in the wider back stories from those fictional universes, we see the motivations, or at least that these characters weren’t originally evil. Especially with the case of Anakin and his gradual fall into evil, it’s a fascinating story. But we don’t need that story to enjoy Episode IV.
I’m probably reading way deeper than you guys intended. Feel free to say, “dude, it was just a podcast!”. Still, it was thought provoking and I wanted to share these thoughts with you!
It is official Dave – you have the longest comment in the history of the podcast – and well thought out too. So, no we’re not going to call you and say you read too much into it. No, far from it. Thanks for a great comment – really it is nice to know that you have ruminated on our fevered ramblings. Glad you like the show!. K+ and Lawrence.
